Is a family protection dog right for your household?
We turn people away from protection dogs regularly, and that is part of the job. A trained protection dog in the wrong home is a liability rather than a reassurance.
A protection dog suits a household that wants a stable family dog first and a deterrent second, has the time for daily structure, and will keep up the handling after handover. It does not suit anyone who wants a dog to be sharp, has no time for exercise and training, or expects the dog to make decisions the handler will not.
Who it works for
Families in isolated properties, people whose work makes them a target, business owners on rural plots, and households where someone is regularly alone. In every one of those cases the dog spends 99 per cent of its life being a normal family dog.
Who it does not work for
Anyone attracted to the idea of an intimidating dog. Anyone who cannot commit to daily structure and regular refresher work. Households where nobody will take clear ownership of the handling, because a dog with two contradictory sets of rules gets confused, and a confused dog with this training is the wrong outcome.
The honest daily reality
Exercise, obedience maintenance, controlled exposure to visitors and deliveries, and refresher sessions. It is closer to keeping a working dog than keeping a pet, and people underestimate that far more often than they underestimate the cost.

The legal position, briefly
You remain responsible for your dog in law, everywhere, including on your own property. A properly trained dog is under control and that is the entire point of the temperament testing, but no training removes the owner's responsibility.
