Guarding is normal dog behaviour that has become a problem in a human house. The growl is information, not defiance, and punishing it usually removes the warning while leaving the feeling intact.
Never take things off the dog to prove a point. Trade instead, approach and drop something better, then walk away. Feed in a quiet space without traffic past the bowl. Do not punish a growl, because the next stage after a suppressed growl is a bite with no warning.
Why the growl matters
A growl is a dog saying it is uncomfortable before it does anything about it. Families who punish growling often report a dog that later bit out of nowhere. It did not, the warning was trained away.
Safe first steps
- ●Feed in a low traffic room, behind a door or a gate if needed.
- ●Trade up rather than confiscate, approach, drop something better, retreat.
- ●Pick up high value items when the dog is not around, not while it is holding one.
- ●Teach a solid leave and a swap on cue with low value objects first.
Children and guarding
Any guarding in a home with young children needs professional input straight away, plus real management. Children cannot be relied upon to read a stiff body, and the consequences are too serious to work through by trial and error.
