Dog barking at the door or at visitors
Door barking is a rehearsed routine. The bell goes, the dog explodes, the person appears anyway, and the dog concludes that barking worked. Break the routine and the barking loses its job.
Give the dog somewhere to be. Teach a place command on a bed away from the door, practise it with fake knocks when nobody is actually visiting, and pay the dog for staying there. Answer the door only when the dog is settled. Never let a barking dog reach the visitor first.
Practise without visitors
Ninety percent of the work happens when nobody is at the door. Knock on your own wall, ring your own bell, open the door to nothing, and reward the dog for staying on its bed. Real visitors are the exam, not the lesson.
Manage while you train
A lead, a baby gate or a closed door stops the dog rehearsing the old routine while the new one is being built. Management is not cheating, it is what stops six weeks of training being undone by one delivery driver.
Do not shout
Shouting at a barking dog sounds like joining in. Say nothing, guide the dog to its place, and let the calm be the thing that gets attention.
Guarding versus noise
There is a difference between a dog that announces the postman and a dog that means it. If your dog is blocking the door, hard staring, or has snapped at a visitor, that is a management and safety issue, and it needs a professional before someone gets hurt.

That is a reasonable goal for most families. One or two barks as an alert, then quiet on cue. Total silence is rarely realistic or necessary.
