Toilet training a puppy, the routine that actually works
Toilet training is not a training problem, it is a management problem. Puppies do not have the bladder control to make good decisions, so your job is to make sure the right decision is the only one available.
Take the puppy out on a timer rather than on hope: after every sleep, every meal, every play session and every 45 minutes in between. Go to the same spot, wait quietly, then pay heavily the second it finishes. Supervise or contain indoors so accidents cannot be rehearsed. Most puppies are largely clean within three weeks of that routine.
The timer beats the signal
Owners usually wait for the puppy to ask. An eight week old puppy has no idea it needs to go until it is already going, so waiting for a signal guarantees accidents. Set a timer instead and go before the puppy needs to.
Nights are shorter than people fear. A puppy that goes out last thing, sleeps in a crate beside the bed and goes straight out on waking will usually be dry through the night within a fortnight.
Why puppy pads slow you down
Pads teach a puppy that toileting indoors on a soft surface is fine, then you have to untrain it. If you have no outdoor access at all, use them, but otherwise skip the middle step and go straight outside.
Accidents, and what not to do
Never punish after the event. The puppy links the telling off to you arriving, not to the puddle, and you get a dog that hides to toilet, which is far harder to fix.
Clean with an enzymatic cleaner. Household cleaners with ammonia smell like urine to a dog and mark the spot as a toilet.
- ●Interrupt calmly if you catch it happening, then carry straight outside.
- ●Reward outside within two seconds of finishing, not when you get back indoors.
- ●Log the accidents for three days, the pattern is nearly always a gap in the routine.
When it is not toilet training
A house trained dog that suddenly regresses needs a vet before a trainer, because urinary infections and other medical causes are common. Submissive or excitement urination on greetings is a confidence issue and responds to calmer arrivals rather than more toilet trips.
